Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks completed a defiant comeback on Sunday night, capturing five Grammy awards after being shunned by the country music establishment over the group's anti-Bush comments leading up to the Iraq invasion. The Texas trio won all the biggest categories, including record and song of the year for the no-regrets anthem "Not Ready to be nice".
The Dixie Chicks is a female country music trio from the United States of America comprising Emily Robison, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines. They are one of the highest-selling female groups in any musical genre, having sold 30 million albums as of June 2006.
The group formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas. After years of struggle and personnel changes, the Dixie Chicks achieved massive country and pop success starting in the late 1990s with hit songs such as "Wide Open Spaces," "Cowboy Take Me Away," and "Long Time Gone." The group became well-known for their lively persona, instrumental virtuosity, fashion sense, and outspoken political comments. As of 2007, they had won 13 Grammy Awards, and are the first country-rooted act in Grammy history to receive three Album of the Year.

Dixie Chicks.. Taking the Long way

The Dixie Chicks' career started long before 2003, when lead singer Natalie Maines' onstage quip redefined the band. It started before 1998, when a song about personal independence called "Wide Open Spaces" redefined Country Music. Long before then, the Dixie Chicks were local favorites in their home base of Dallas, Texas, working the honky tonk and high school cafeteria circuit. This site is dedicated to that early phase of their career, when the Dixie Chicks were a band with a lot of promise... and a long road ahead.
2003 - present: "The Incident" takes the focus off the music entirely. The Dixie Chicks become a strawman in a fight over a nation's foreign policy. Not willing to capitulate to their opponents, the Chicks jump into the fray... with mixed results. After a successful tour and live album, the members turn inward, growing their families and writing songs about the experience. Three years later, they release an album whose lead single says "I'm not ready to make nice... I'm not ready to back down."
